From FOV2GO to HMD’s: MxR’s Open Source Designs

The open source designs of the MxR Lab at ICT are featured today in a NY Times article on the Oculus Rift. Starting with early smartphone based, foam-core folded prototypes and moving into 3D printed viewers, the lab’s research in low-cost virtual reality displays produced the Socket HMD,  an open design used to inform elements of the Oculus Rift headset. Templates for all of the MxR viewers and source code to develop your own virtual world’s will be available on the MxR Open Source site.
